I want to begin by saying this is in no way a complete list of all of the wonderful sights and historical magnificence this city has to offer. I will however say that on my short stay in Cairo these were a few of my favorites. This huge metropolitan city is home to some of the most interesting and unforgettable attractions in the world. The people are friendly and the food is delicious. Bundle that up with a few thousand years of the most interesting history on the planet and who wouldn’t want to come to Cairo?

Let’s start this tour with the crown jewel of Egypt.

  1. The Pyramids of Giza

These complete marvels of engineering with their magical and mystical past need no introduction. On the outskirts of Cairo, you will find the last of the original 7 wonders of the world.  Towering over the city these magnificent crypts are a long-lasting symbol of one of the greatest civilizations in history. Make sure you have a guide prior to coming to the pyramids. There are always locals who stand around offering to give you a tour for an inflated price. I recommend going with a tour company to get the most out of your trip. I will list some at the end of this blog.

  1. Stand above it all at the Citadel

Built in the 12th century to protect the city from crusaders. It is now one of the only car-free places in the city. It sits high up on a hill overlooking the city. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the pyramids It is one of the less touristy spots in Cairo so you may even get the chance to have an interaction with a local. I found the people of Cairo to be very friendly and most speak English so you should not have a problem communicating.

  1. Visit the unique churches of Coptic Cairo

This is the oldest area in Cairo. It has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. It’s a relatively quiet area with little traffic. The perfect place to wander around and take in the sights. This is considered the Christian area of Cairo. One of the most interesting churches is called the Hanging Church. It was built over a Roman fortress. Inside there is a glass floor that allows you to view the gatehouse below.

  1. Travel through time at the Egyptian Museum

I know not everyone considers themselves museum people but this is one you shouldn’t miss. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is crammed full of some of the most interesting artifacts you will ever see. I’m not kidding when I say full. Its floor-to-ceiling artifacts. Even though I would definitely say it’s not the most organized of museums its mesmerizingly interesting items could keep anyone enthralled for an afternoon.

  1. Take a walk through the world’s oldest open-air market.

Khan El-Kalili souk is a maze of sights, smells, and sounds that is not to be missed when visiting Cairo. Filled with spices, clothing, leather goods, jewelry and antiques there is definitely something for everyone. This is my favorite spot to find souvenirs but in this busy market keep your eye out for pickpockets and NEVER follow anyone to the back of their shop it’s often a scam.

  1. Have a truly authentic Egyptian Meal

One thing I can say about Egypt is there is no reason to go hungry. Food is a way of life in this culture. While in the United States meals typically consist of three to four items in Egypt you can easily have your entire table covered with this delicious cuisine. Definitely take a food tour but also try a relaxing sit-down meal. Trust me your stomach with thank you.

  1. Visit the Mosque of Mohommad Ali

Located inside the citadel this beautiful mosque is one of the first landmarks you’ll see. Sitting high above the city. It has a distinctive Turkish look and that’s probably because the architect was from Istanbul. You do not have to cover your head to enter but you will need to remove your shoes. I suggest carrying them so as to not lose them outside.

  1. Take a Felucca Ride on the Nile

The absolute best way to see the sunset in Cairo is from the Nile. There are two ways you can do this the first is to go on one of the many dinner cruises where you will have lots of people and dancing, a very touristy experience the other is to hire a felucca. Feluccas are traditional Egyptian sailboats and can be hired for a very reasonable amount. They are extremely comfortable and have plenty of room. You can join a group or rent one on your own. They allow you to bring your own food, so plan your own quiet dinner cruise and watch the sun drift away and you float peacefully up the Nile.

  1. Travel to Saqqara

Not far out of the city is the old capital of the old and middle kingdoms. It’s also the home to the oldest step pyramid. While most of the tombs in Egypt no longer hold mummies they recently have unearthed several here. They have an active dig currently happening. You can also see one of the most significant buildings in Ancient Egypt… The mummification building. I suggest a good guide who can explain it to you. While it’s very terrifying to think this could happen it’s still very interesting.

  1.  Go see the dancers

Whether you see the whirling dervishes or the belly dancers, Egyptian dancing is not to be missed. While being an integral part of the culture it’s just a fun way to spend an evening. There are many places you can enjoy them but my favorite is a dinner cruise. They are very easy to find. I would ask for suggestions from the hotel staff. It seems everyone has a favorite.
